April 14-20 is National Gardening Week, the RHS’ annual attempt to get us off the sofa and onto the beds with a series of events and initiatives. It has extra oomph because 2014 is also the 50th anniversary of Britain in Bloom, the annual campaign to beautify communal spaces, which involves more than 300,000 people.
The theme this year is Growing for Gold. Gardeners are being urged to transform local community spaces a by sowing a mini field of sunflowers. As well as being attractive to look at, sunflowers are great for pollinators, and will provide plenty of food for insects.
To encourage people to get involved, Telegraph Gardening and the RHS have 3,000 sunflower prize packs to win, with a total value of £7,500. The first 3,000 people to sign up below will receive an information bundle along with a packet containing four varieties of seed: Giant Single, Moonwalker, Yaiyo and Vanilla Ice.
